I am not normally a work from home kind of person. Working from home for me was always due to a physical constraint of needing to be at home for something – accepting a parcel that had to be signed for, or having a workman round to fix the oven, that kind of thing. Other than that, I much preferred to be in the office, since I love being part of a team and I like having the team in the office with me.
Yes – there’s an element of the social animal in me. Having the chat with the guys and gals around the watercooler, filling each other in around the latest that happened at the weekend, a movie watched, a TV series binged – all things that make work fun. Work definitely feels a lot less like work when you’re enjoying what you are doing and enjoying who you are with while doing it.
There is also the team bonding aspect as well – building rapport, understanding each other’s strengths and weaknesses, even knowing when we need to be left alone (or not) – I’ve always found to be best achieved when we are together. Plus, senior people need to be in and available to help more junior people; likewise, junior members need to be in, so that they can learn and lean in on those guys with knowledge to share. Sure, there are exceptions but surely this can’t be effective if some come into the office and others don’t.
But that was then. Roll on to the global pandemic.
I have moved jobs and started my new role at Cygilant as the VP of Engineering (check out the announcement here). I’m building out the team – we are now over 25 people strong in Belfast. All without stepping foot into my new office.
P.S. we are still hiring (seven roles, multiple positions) and hosting a Virtual Tech Career Open House on Wednesday, June 24, 2020 at 5 p.m. (UK) if you are interested in joining the team! Register here and check out the available positions here.
My experience was definitely unique from being onboarded completely remotely, to hiring remotely, to having to figure out how to get equipment, to meeting my teammates and getting ramped up. So I thought, why don’t I share my experience and my team’s experience with everyone else?
So with that, we are excited to announce our new blog and video series, “Working From Home - The New Norm,” that will explore the above topics and share experience from other Cygilant team members that joined during this crazy time!
I’ll share more of my thoughts soon, but next up in part two we will sit down with two members of the team – Dermot and Natalie.
Hope you follow along!
